Lawmakers blasted the state Department of Transportation and Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s budget chief.
Members of the Finance and Transportation Committees, meeting in a joint session to review projected cost overruns in the 10-year, $1.17 billion project, realized there might not be adequate maintenance facilities by the time delivery starts late next year on 300 new Kawasaki M-8 rail cars.
Robert L. Genuario, secretary of the Office of Policy and Management, apologized for not keeping the General Assembly apprised of cost hikes that resulted primarily from higher-than-anticipated inflation that has reached a startling 10 percent annually.
Read more here, looks like the Rell administration was hiding the cost over-runs except for the fact that she needed the Democratic supermajority’s power of the purse.

As Rep. Jim Shapiro, D-Stamford said, the more than 10 years of construction is unacceptable. “We built the Panama Canal in that time.”
